Schedule for Purim 5765 - 2005

I. Shabbos Zachor: Shabbos, March 19, 2005
A. It is a mitzvah for men and women to hear the special Torah reading of Parshas Zachor (Devarim 25:17-19). This Torah portion relates the ambush of our nation by the people of Amalek, evoking our hatred and inspiring our commitment to eradicate the memory of this bitter enemy.

II. Ta’anis Esther: Thursday, March 24, 2005
A. Men and women are obligated to fast from dawn (5:08 AM) until night (7:08 PM).
B. The requirement of fasting is relaxed for sick people or for pregnant and nursing women.
C. Mincha is at 6:05 PM, which includes a special Torah reading for the fast.
D. It is customary to donate 3 half-shekels to commemorate those that were donated this time of year in the days of the Temple. One also gives for his wife, sons and daughters, even for an unborn child. A plate will be designated for this purpose in Shul.

III. Purim Night: Thursday, March 24, 2005
A. Al Hanissim is inserted in the Shemone Esrei for Maariv as well as in Bircas Hamazon. If you forgot to include Al Hanissim, you need not repeat Shemone Esrei or bentching.
B. The Megillah will be read at 7:00 PM. One must hear the entire Megillah to fulfill the Mitzvah. If one missed hearing even one word, one did not fulfill the Mitzvah. In the event that a word was missed, one should begin reading from that word on, either in a Kosher Megillah or in a Chumash, continuing until one has caught up with the person reading the Megillah aloud in Shul.
C. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to Shul for Megillah reading. However, please do not bring babies who will make noise, causing others to lose the opportunity of fulfilling this important Mitzvah. Please instruct your children not to bang exces- sively after Haman’s name is read.

IV. Purim Day: Friday, March 25, 2005
A. First minyan for Shacharis is at 6:45 AM, second Minyan is at 8:15 AM. The Megillah will be read at 7:15 AM and 8:45 AM. A special reading of the Megillah for women will be at 10:15 AM. Men, women and children are obligated to hear the daytime read- ing of the Megillah.
B. When the reader pronounces the blessing Shehechiyanu at the daytime reading, he and the congregants should have in mind not only the reading of the Megillah, but also the other Mitzvos of the day - Mishloach Manos, Matanos L’evyonim, and the Purim Seudah.
C. On the day of Purim, men and women are obligated to send Mishloach Manos, a gift to at least one friend of a minimum of two types of fully prepared food or drink.
D. On the day of Purim, men and women are obligated to give Matanos L’evyonim, money or food to at least two poor people. Money for this Mitzvah can be placed in marked plates in Shul Purim morning. The money collected will be distributed on Purim Day.
E. There is an obligation to have a Purim Seudah, eat a festive meal on the day of Purim. As today is Erev Shabbos - There are two options when to schedule the Purim Seudah — (1) Begin eating before midday (12:27 PM) and finish before Shabbos. (2) Combine the Purim Seudah with the Friday night meal. When using the second option, one begins the meal a few hours before Shabbos (4:30 PM) pausing during the meal to accept Shabbos (6:16 PM) by covering the bread and making Kiddush. One need not wash again for the bread or make a bracha over the wine during Kiddush (the bracha for wine that was said at the beginning of the Purim Seudah suffices). Maariv is said after the Friday night meal is over.
F. One should drink wine during the meal until he can no longer distinguish between “Blessed is Mordechai” and “Cursed is Haman”. If one fears that as a consequence of such drinking, he will neglect Torah principles or behave improperly, one should only drink a bit more than usual.
G. One should be indiscriminate and generous in allocating charity on Purim. The epitome of happiness is to bring joy to the less fortunate. Through this, one emulates the Almighty who sustains the meek and supports the downtrodden.

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Ohr Chaim Sisterhood, we would like to introduce you to an exciting new Bas-Mitzvah program for mothers and daughters which will make this special milestone even more meaningful. We have named the program Tehilla. This year-long program is specifically designed for girls in fifth grade and up who are preparing for their Bas-Mitzvah. It is intended to help them see how we, as Jewish women, play an integral role in the continuity of the Jewish People. A young girl's Bas-Mitzvah serves as a bridge connecting her to Jewish history and the extended community. The activities we have planned will focus on great Jewish women from the past and how their lives relate to ours today. These exciting sessions will involve learning, doing mitzvos, performing chesed, singing, discussions with guest speakers, and diverse fun activities. Mothers and daughters will have a special opportunity to grow together during this meaningful time. The girls and their families will participate in a group siyum, at the end of the Tehilla program, to celebrate their commitment to learning throughout the year.

Please join us for our opening event on Sunday, March 20th at 11:00 AM. We will meet for “Tea and Cake” at Tea for Two, 1205 17th Street, where we will discuss in greater detail all the wonderful events that we have planned. We warmly encourage you and your daughter to join us and look forward to greeting you there. If you are aware of anyone else who would be interested in the Tehilla program, please feel free to pass this letter along to them. May this year be filled with growth, learning and fun. Please RSVP by Friday, March 18th, to Jennifer in our Shul office, #305-674-1326, to reserve your spot for March 20th.

Sincerely,

DELEGATION OF POWER OF ATTORNEY
FOR SALE OF CHOMETZ

I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit HaRav A. Stolper to act on my behalf to sell all chometz possessed by me (knowingly or unknowingly) as defined by the Torah and Rabbinic law (e.g. chometz, doubt of chometz, and all kinds of chometz mixtures); also chometz that tends to harden and adhere to a surface or inside of pans and pots or cooking and usable utensils and all kinds of live animals that have been eating chometz or mixtures thereof, and to lease all places wherein the chometz owned by me, may be found, especially on the premises located at:

and elsewhere. The approximate value is $____________________________. This includes transit goods that would be delivered to me during the period of Friday, April 21 to Sunday, May 1 2005, inclusive. HaRav Stolper has the full right to sell and to lease my transactions as he deems fit and proper and for such time which he believes necessary, to a non-Jew of his choosing.

Also, I do hereby give HaRav A. Stolper full power and authority to appoint a substitute in his stead with full power to sell and lease as provided.

The above-given power is in conformity with all Torah and Rabbinical regulations and laws, and also in accordance with the laws of the State of Florida and of the United States.

I hereby affix my signature:

Type of chometz, i.e. baked goods, non-Pesach matzoh, flour, yeast, cereals, bread crumbs, groceries, gefilte fish, canned foods, certain pills, medications, cosmetics, animal food, alcohol (ethyl), liquor, beer.

NOTE: RICE, SWEET CORN, PEAS AND BEANS DO NOT HAVE TO BE SOLD, BUT MAY NOT BE

PESACH 5765 - 2005

It is forbidden for a Jew to possess chometz during Pesach, even if not eaten. To avoid considerable financial loss, a procedure of selling chometz to a non-Jew is performed to legally transfer ownership of one’s chometz at both home or business during Pesach.

The sale is legally and halachically binding. You should know the estimated value and what you have for sale.

The chometz you are going to sell should be stored and\or locked in a room, closet, cabinet or bin, no later than 11:00 AM Friday, April 21, 2005.

Dishes and utensils are NOT SOLD. They should be cleaned and stored away until after Pesach. What hardens and adheres to utensils and tableware IS SOLD.

When you appoint the Rav as your agent, you are not selling the chometz to the Rav, you are giving the Rav power-of-attorney to act in your stead to sell the chometz to a non-Jew.

To appoint the Rav as your agent, you will find on the reverse side, a form which you should complete, INDICATING WHERE YOUR CHOMETZ IS STORED AND ITS APPROXIMATE VALUE. This form should be signed and given to the Rav prior to Erev Pesach. You must meet with the Rav personally (or send a representative) to consummate this transaction with “Kinyan Suddor”, which the Rav will explain to you.

Rav Stolper will be in Shul everyday after Shacharis and Maariv to answer any questions and help in completing your delegation of power to sell your chometz.

If you desire, you may call HaRav Stolper at his office, 538-5118 or send a fax to 673-3503.
