Why Is This Night Different? |
The
most ubiquitous concept associated with our many Mitzvah observances is
"Remembering the Exodus". This diurnal remembrance reaches its
crescendo on the Seder night where the obligation of remembering matures
into an actual reliving of the Exodus. What is the seminal nature of this
historic event that necessitates our near-compulsive attitude of constant
memory and yearly experiential reliving? The 13th Century Halachic codifier
Rabbeinu Asher, in his: "Orchos Chaim", explains the following:
The belief in the existence of a Deity and Creator, even a sophisticated,
non-pagan, monotheistic G-d is shared by a plethora of people. The unique
dimension of the Jewish People lies in our belief in Hashgacha Pratis,
intimate Divine Providence. The Exodus from Egypt demonstrated the power
of the guiding Hand of the Almighty in manipulating the course of world
history and our personal lives. Our constant obligation to recall the
Exodus helps us expand the myopic, universal attitude of a "distant"
G-d into the omniscient, involved Hashem of Am Yisroel. The great Chassidic thinker, Rav Tzadok HaCohen of Lublin understood the obligation of remembering the Exodus in a different way. Our Rabbis tell us that there are 50 levels of spiritual depravity. The Jewish People fell to the 49th level prior to their redemption. Although their situation was dire, as long as they didn't fall to the last level, there was hope for revival. Rav Tzadok teaches that the obligation to remember the Exodus lies in our need to be cognizant that there is always hope for spiritual renewal. No matter how far a Jew falls, even if it's to the very nadir of defilement, there can still be exodus and redemption. Were we to amalgamate these two ideas, the message of Pesach would be as follows: Why is this night different from all other nights? For tonight, the loving and caring Hand of Divine Providence can overtly be felt. A Hand extended even to those who have sinned and erred, lifting them up to join the eternal people of Hashem who passionately serve Him with all their heart and soul. |
Wishing you all a Chag Kosher

When Erev Pesach Falls on Shabbos |
|||
| It is prohibited to eat matza on Erev Pesach. There are a number of ways to navigate through the Shabbos meal. Practically speaking, one may adopt one of the following opinions. | |||
Challah Method |
|||
1. Before Shabbos, the entire
house is made" Pesachdike", with all chometz utensils in their
proper place. Pesach food is cooked in Pesach pots and served on Pesach
dishes. A small Challah roll is provided for each adult and responsible
child. Kiddush is recited and Hamotzie is made with the Challah on top
of a paper napkin. The entire Challah is consumed. The crumbs on the paper
napkin are carefully gathered and flushed down the toilet. The meal is
then continued, with Pesach food served on Pesach dishes. Some prefer
to eat the Challah on a small table, away from the table containing the
Pesachdike dishes. One is likewise permitted to eat the Challah in the
backyard, as long as one intends to do so when he made Kiddush, and can
see the place where the Kiddush was recited. |
|||
Egg Matza Method |
|||
2. According to the Shulchan
Aruch, it is permitted to eat egg matza on Pesach. This view is followed
by Jews of Sephardic origin. Ashkenazic Jews follow the Ramah, who forbids
egg matza on Pesach, and only permits it for sick or elderly people who
are unable to consume regular matza. The Bracha for egg matza is "Mezonos".
However, if one is using egg matza for the "bread" of the meal
, one must wash, recite the Bracha of "Hamotzie" and bench after
the meal. Therefore, instead of using Challah, one may use egg matza as
the bread and reduce the risk of having chometz left over on Pesach. This
is especially practical when there are children participating in the meal.
The Friday night and Shabbos Day meals can then be eaten on Pesachdike
dishes without fear of "contamination". One should be careful
to remove whatever egg matza remains so he won't eat it on Pesach. One
may, however, eat Pesachdike matza meal "knaidlach" at the Friday
night and Shabbos meals. |
|||
Seudah Shlishis |
|||
One should conclude the morning
davening early enough to wash, eat the Challah, or egg matza, and partake
of the dishes to be served at that meal. One should then bentch and have
a brief intermission (by taking a walk or learning). One should then wash
again and partake of Challah or egg matza, and fulfill the mitzvah of
Seudah Shlishis before 10:45 AM. Reminder: One may not eat Challah or egg matza after 10:45 AM. |
|||
| 10:45 AM | Latest time for eating chometz or egg matza | ||

DELEGATION OF POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR SALE OF CHOMETZ |
| I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit
HaRav A. Stolper to act on my behalf to sell all chometz possessed by
me (knowingly or unknowingly) as defined by the Torah and Rabbinic law
(e.g. chometz, doubt of chometz, and all kinds of chometz mixtures); also
chometz that tends to harden and adhere to a surface or inside of pans
and pots or cooking and usable utensils and all kinds of live animals
that have been eating chometz or mixtures thereof, and to lease all places
wherein the chometz owned by me, may be found, especially on the premises
located at: ________________________________________ Also, I do hereby give HaRav A. Stolper full power and authority to appoint a substitute in his stead with full power to sell and lease as provided. The above-given power is in conformity with all Torah and Rabbinical regulations and laws, and also in accordance with the laws of the State of Florida and of the United States. I hereby affix my signature: __________________Nissan 5765 Signature___________________________ Type of chometz, i.e. baked goods, non-Pesach
matzoh, flour, yeast, cereals, bread crumbs, groceries, gefilte fish,
canned foods, certain pills, medications, cosmetics, animal food, alcohol
(ethyl), liquor, beer. |
PESACH 5765 - 2005 |
It is forbidden for a Jew to possess chometz during Pesach, even if not eaten. To avoid considerable financial loss, a procedure of selling chometz to a non-Jew is performed to legally transfer ownership of one’s chometz at both home or business during Pesach. The sale is legally and halachically binding. You should know the estimated value and what you have for sale. The chometz you are going to sell should be stored and\or locked in a room, closet, cabinet or bin, no later than 11:00 AM Friday, April 21, 2005. Dishes and utensils are NOT SOLD. They should be cleaned and stored away until after Pesach. What hardens and adheres to utensils and tableware IS SOLD. When you appoint the Rav as your agent, you are not selling the chometz to the Rav, you are giving the Rav power-of-attorney to act in your stead to sell the chometz to a non-Jew. To appoint the Rav as your agent, you will find on the reverse side, a form which you should complete, INDICATING WHERE YOUR CHOMETZ IS STORED AND ITS APPROXIMATE VALUE. This form should be signed and given to the Rav prior to Erev Pesach. You must meet with the Rav personally (or send a representative) to consummate this transaction with “Kinyan Suddor”, which the Rav will explain to you. Rav Stolper will be in Shul everyday after Shacharis and Maariv to answer any questions and help in completing your delegation of power to sell your chometz. If you desire, you may call HaRav Stolper at his office, 538-5118 or send a fax to 673-3503. |
